sometimes when I see this, I cannot help to think that my younger sister - with her Canadian passport in her pocket - decided to contact an immigration lawyer in Europe to settle in Spain or Portugal. As she is overseas the whole year and it’s been more than 2 years now she is gone, she pays taxes there instead of here in Canada. Just thinking of that is a real pleasure sometimes…

I come from AFRICA but lived in France for more than a decade before immigrating to Canada. I have also been to Germany and New Zealand - countries where POLICE VIOLENCES seem MUCH less prevalent than in France, the US or even Canada.
As mentioned earlier, France has also some issues with police brutality, particularly affecting visible minorities. However, I never expected that Canada, especially Alberta and to some extent Quebec, would face similar problems.
I remember a story from 2002, when I was attending a university in Paris. A girl in my program was dating a Black man (in his early 20s) who was ambitious and determined to succeed and make a difference. One night, as he walked back home minding his own business, he stumbled upon an identity check on the way back, which went “south” (the attitude if the police was extremely aggressive) and he was quite brutally beaten by French police officers and returned home seriously injured. Despite clear signs of abuse, they were never able to get the officers charged. Whether it was a lack of evidence or a biased judge, nothing happened.
He lived with that trauma for months. About six to eight months later, while walking through town with his girlfriend, they unexpectedly ran into the same two officers, who were having lunch at a restaurant. The boyfriend wanted to confront them, but his girlfriend held him back, saying she had a better idea.
At that point, they still had no proof.
So what did they do?
They simply walked away and let the officers finish their meal.
Later, they went home, and the girlfriend drafted a résumé, adding some fabricated experience in the restaurant industry. She even included a reference from a restaurant owned by a friend of her father, who could vouch for her if needed.
Eventually, she applied to that very restaurant. Using her charm, communication skills, and her partially fabricated résumé, she managed to get hired as a waitress.
I think you can imagine what may have happened next.

In AFrica where I come from, manifestations are common (political issues). Back in the 1990s, there were a few violent uprising in my city (it was just a few years before my dad decided to look for an employment in France to flee the dictatorship, and also, for our own safety). During one of those uprising, there was a Police chief commander who used his power to terrorize people, beat women on the street, beat children with no defense and even beat whoever they wanted to beat. The events went all over the local news back then and trust me, I avoided to go out often, and so did everyone.
Why was it happening? It all happened because OUR African government are usually elected to PROTECT WESTERN INTERESTS (mining corporations and more) rather than the interests of AFRICANS...don't start to think otherwise!!
As time went by, this ABUSIVE Chief was NEVER Arrested despite many proofs and many claims made by the family of the victims. His house was said to be very well guarded and he was himself heavily armed and protected.
But one day...
he decided to move to another city. Strangely, after a few years there, there was this news that stated that his daughter slipped on the stairs as she went back from school (At the time it happened, we were just starting to settle in France but I remembered my mom and my aunt - who was calling from Africa - were talking about it over the phone). Some say that she slipped because it was raining and the stairs were wet, however, some rumors speak about the presence of one or two individuals who were on the stairs too...but it was impossible to confirm as nobody wanted to testify or even confirm or infirm while many just said "we saw nothing", "we were not there"
This event clearly shows how - in some cases - Abuses can lead to. It also shows that when the JUSTICE System is WEAK, then alternatives can thrive...
I remember a case, while I was living in France whereby a neighbour of ours went into a violent dispute one night. We never knew why at that moment but as they left the neighborhood, many started to speak out and we heard that the lady received an anonymous letter in her mailbox, with inside some recordings showing her husband abusing and bullying a classmate who remained traumatized by the incident. No one knew who sent the package but what is sure is that it happened 17-18 years ago.
Another example where some people are not letting things go and where past actions sometimes come to haunt you or in this case, used against you by someone who is still holding grudge against you.

Despite the issues we face in France, there is at least an institution, called the GIGN, that oversees police conduct and, in some cases, holds officers accountable when they are found guilty of abuse or misconduct, like in this case where a black teenager was bictim of an abuse

After reading this article about police violence in France, I started wondering about how these issues compare elsewhere.
In places like Alberta and Quebec, situations like this don’t seem as common....or am I missing something?
Now, looking at Quebec, a place that often presents itself as welcoming (especially compared to France), there also seem to be underlying challenges. At times, it can feel contradictory promoting inclusivity while still struggling with systemic issues.

Even in France, despite its very heavy colonial past, it sometimes feels like the justice system can be comparatively fair in holding people accountable, although, of course, there is still a lot of room for improvement. That said, Canada may also need to reflect more critically on its own systems.
For Canadians, it might be worth reconsidering the tendency to point fingers at the United States for issues like police brutality, racism, and violence. While those problems are often highlighted south of the border, it’s clear that Canada has its own challenges to address and a long way to go as well.
Finally, one observation: it’s not surprising that some immigrants choose not to stay long-term. I’ve personally seen many come to Canada, spend a few years here, sometimes even gaining permanent residency or citizenship and then eventually leave for countries like France, Germany, Austria, Belgium or Southern Europe, where my sister immigrated to after having spent many years up here! Obviously, she left for other reasons (not because she had issue with police), including the cost of living, the hypocrisy of the society up here (fakeness), the boredom of life in Canada (and I agree), food quality, cost of education (EXTREMELY competitive in Europe), the Canadian (and American) banking system that pushes you to REMAIN INDEBTED so that ...THEY CAN GET RICH while us Canadians (oohhh I have been in a worse situation and I know how it is to be indebted although things have improved a bit now) are repaying interests on loans, REASON WHY, I personally DO NOT WANT TO STAY NOR REMAIN in Canada, and surely, I DO NOT WANT to IMMIGRATE to the United States EVEN if D.Trump leaves and EVEN IF I obtain a US visa!!!
Dear Americans, FEEL FREE TO GIVE the US VISA I am entitled to to another person you can ENSLAVE and to whim you can make believe that the US is everything but a DICTATORSHIP, a country with very LIMITED HUMAN RIGHTS, a country where pedophiles can get away with their criimes but where your poor black Americans who did 1000x less can get HARASSED, ABUSED and ARRESTED by some frustrated between their legs and “well travellebed to the grocery store” white and no-backbone Black officers (worse than corrupt!),

POLICING in the US (and even in Canada, particularly in Alberta and Quebec) involves investing too much time and energy running after minority groups, especially blacks!!! BUT I think that IF the police and those implementing the policies were smart, they would invest resources into:
1. the thousands of unsolved cases of murders, rapes and so on
2. Invest resources onto those sick morons who are molesters and child predators instead of WASTING Your policing time HARRASSING BLACK TEENAGERS!
If you are that smart, you would be already DOING THAT and MANY KIDS (including many WHITE KIDS) would be MUCH SAFER
3. Invest the TAXES paid by CANADIANS and AMERICANS to pursue REAL CRIMINALS, that include Child molestors, drug dealers (REAL ONES, not the illegal Aliens who work his asses off to pick up corn and whom you guys are MISTREATING with he help of ICE)
4. REFORM the justice system to PUNISH ABUSIVE POLICE OFFICERS!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A STRONG JUSTICE SYSTEM ?
I would say that having a good justice system is good but having an impartial overseeing body for police abuses is even better?
In many US States, it seems like a Police oversight body are far from being impartial. Should the victim be black and poor, chances are 99.9% high that justice will never be served, proofs buried and perpetrators left to enjoy their lives.
Strangely, many Canadian provinces seem to be NOT that good either despite improvements. We still see some biases in how punishments and accountability are far from being fair. And yes we are in a country that is so proud to have NEVER COLONIZED AFRICA nor is not the US!!!
This is by the existence of an impartial and WEAK justice system that Alternative ideas flourish, like this French girl who decided to work in this restaurant to look for a "kind of justice" (refer to the stories above) or like this young girl in my African country who slipped or ... "encouraged to slip" on the stairs years and years later after her dad withdrew".
I have many stories to tell but telling each and everyone of them here would take enormous time.
